Choose QR print dimensions based on scanning distance, data density, material, and production quality.
There is no universal print size that works for every QR code. The answer depends on module count, expected scanning distance, camera quality, contrast, surface, lighting, and how accurately the printer reproduces small squares.
Start from the scanning situation
A code on a business card is scanned from close range. A shop window, poster, vehicle, or stage sign is viewed farther away and should be much larger. Do not scale from a tiny example by intuition alone. Print a full-size proof and test from the farthest realistic position.
Density changes the requirement
Long URLs, contact cards with many fields, and high error-correction settings can create more modules. If the physical width stays fixed, every module becomes smaller. Shorten the actual content where practical, or increase the overall print size. A short direct HTTPS URL often produces a cleaner result than a long address full of tracking parameters.
Protect the geometry
Export SVG or another vector format when the production workflow supports it. If using PNG, choose enough pixels for the final dimensions and never stretch one direction independently. Preserve the quiet zone and avoid placing the code across a fold, seam, highly curved edge, or reflective patch.
A reliable proofing process
- Print at final size on the actual material.
- Test with several current and older phones.
- Scan in bright, dim, and angled conditions.
- Confirm the decoded destination, not only that an app opens.
- Retest a production sample after finishing or lamination.
