vCard QR Code Best Practices for Business Cards

Create a contact QR code that imports cleanly without exposing unnecessary personal information.

A vCard QR code can open a contact preview containing a name, organization, title, telephone number, email, website, and address. It saves typing, but adding every possible field can make the code dense and reveal more information than intended.

Include only useful fields

Start with the professional name, role, organization, preferred work number, work email, and a stable HTTPS website. Add a physical address only when it helps visitors. Avoid birthdays, private mobile numbers, home addresses, or internal notes on a card distributed publicly.

Plan for changes

A static vCard cannot update itself. If job titles or numbers change frequently, consider encoding a stable profile page instead, then keep that page current. The page approach needs an internet connection but can offer accessibility, multiple contact methods, and a clear privacy notice.

Design and testing

Place the code away from the trim edge and leave an empty quiet zone. Print the human-readable contact information beside it so the card remains useful without a camera. Test the final card on iPhone and Android, checking field order, country codes, special characters, and whether the website opens correctly.

Do not claim that a scan automatically saves the contact. Mobile systems generally show a preview and let the person decide. That user-controlled step is helpful and should remain clear in your call to action.
