Improve barcode scanning by controlling size, resolution, margins, contrast, and packaging.
A valid data string can still fail when the printed bars are blurred, distorted, clipped, or placed on difficult material. Barcode quality is a production issue as much as a software issue.
Preserve bar width and height
Do not stretch artwork horizontally or vertically. Use vector output when supported, or a raster image with enough resolution for the final dimensions. Ink spread can make narrow bars wider; low toner, thermal-head damage, or aggressive compression can make them incomplete.
Keep clear margins
One-dimensional symbols need blank areas on the left and right so the scanner can recognize their boundaries. Text, borders, folds, or another code placed too close can interfere. Do not crop a generator export tightly around the first and last bar.
Consider the surface
Curved bottles can hide part of a wide code. Gloss, foil, and transparent packaging can reflect light or reduce contrast. Seams, corrugation, wrinkles, and stretch film change bar geometry. Rotate or reposition the code according to the package and printer guidance.
Verify, do not only scan once
A phone app reading one sample is not a formal quality grade. Test multiple production samples with the scanner used in the real workflow. Regulated or high-volume supply chains may require a barcode verifier and a documented grade under an applicable standard.
Preflight
- Confirm symbology and exact data.
- Preserve leading zeros and check digits.
- Check final dimensions and quiet zones.
- Inspect contrast and edge sharpness.
- Test after lamination, application, and packing.
