Compare two-dimensional QR codes with common one-dimensional barcodes by data, scanning, and use case.
Traditional barcodes and QR codes both represent machine-readable data, but they arrange it differently. Many common retail barcodes are one-dimensional: the scanner interprets the widths and spacing of vertical bars. A QR code is two-dimensional and uses modules across both directions.
Data and size
A typical UPC or EAN symbol carries a fixed retail identifier and prints the digits for human reference. Code 128 can encode a wider set for logistics or internal tracking. QR codes can store more varied content such as a web address, text, contact card, or Wi-Fi configuration. More data still produces a denser QR symbol.
Scanning environment
Retail point-of-sale systems are designed around approved product identifiers and specific symbologies. Phones commonly recognize QR codes through a camera. Industrial workflows may use dedicated imagers that support both 1D and 2D formats. Choose based on the actual system that must read the code, not only on appearance.
Registration and compliance
A generator turns supplied data into artwork. It does not assign a company prefix, register a product, or guarantee a retailer will accept it. Simple selection rule
Use the mandated barcode format for an established retail, shipping, laboratory, or inventory system. Use a QR code when camera access and flexible consumer-facing content are the priority. Always print a final proof and verify it with the intended scanner.
